Tentative Schedule for Day I: Public Conference on National IT Policy

09:00-09:15 Welcome - Sherif Kamel (American University in Cairo) and Galen Sevcik (Robinson College of Business, Georgia State University)
09:15-10:45 Session I: Government's Role in Promoting IT in Egypt

For this session, the target keynote speaker is a high-level policy maker or a prominent promoter of IT in Egypt. The speaker will address the challenges facing Egypt as an emerging economy. The potential of IT in transforming economies will be a central theme of the talk.
10:45-11:15 Coffee Break
11:15-12:30 Session II: National Policies and IT Transfer: What Science Knows So Far

During this session, a prominent international researcher will explore the interplay between IT policy and economic development. The goal of this session is to articulate the state of scientific understanding of this phenomenon.
12:30-13:30 LUNCH
13:30-14:15 Session III: Egyptian National IT Policies: Their Substance and Intention

This session will present the nature and goals of the current IT policies in Egypt to ensure that all attendees are familiar with the broad range of initiatives undertaken by the Egyptian government. This session will be led by team members of the NSF project (IIS-0082473 IT Transfer to Egypt: Process Model for Developing Countries).
14:15-15:00 Session IV: Opportunities and Challenges of Conducting Research in Egypt

The purpose of this session will be to present the general issues of gathering and interpreting research data in Egypt. As head of the Social Research Center at the American University in Cairo, the speaker led the team that gathered Phase III data for the NSF project (IIS-0082473 IT Transfer to Egypt: Process Model for Developing Countries). This effort consisted of over 250 in-depth (?)interviews with Egyptian users of computer systems.

15:30-17:00 Session V: The Preliminary Findings of the NSF Project

This session will present the preliminary findings of the three year NSF-sponsored research program that has focused on ITT in Egypt. The research team will provide participants with a comprehensive public exposition of the preliminary findings.
